Mentoring Moms mentors make a difference
to mothers and their families.
Mentoring Moms is a program that trains and supervises volunteers to serve as mentors to mothers who are working hard to provide a safe, stable home for their families. Mentors are trusted allies who provide emotional support and practical guidance to mothers who are struggling to make a good life for themselves and their family.
Do I have what it takes to be a Mentor?
Are you a good listener? Can you be supportive and non-judgmental? Are you willing to provide encouragement to a mother working hard to build a better future for her family? Then, yes, you have what it takes!
Mentoring Moms mentors are caring women who understand how hard it is to raise a family and want to make life a bit easier for another mom.
What do mentors do?
“At first I didn’t want a mentor, but I know now that I do need support. It’s been a big help. I don’t feel so overwhelmed anymore” is how one mentee mom describes the value of her mentor.
After a background check is done and training is complete, mentors are matched with mothers referred through local child protective services or other community agencies. Mentors commit to ongoing monthly contacts with the mothers for a one year period at mutually agreeable times. Once matched, mentors help the mom establish short term life goals that she wants to work on. Whether it is providing practical help with everyday challenges, such as navigating community resources, or giving emotional support as she sorts through difficult issues, mentors are a healthy outlet and positive presence in the mom’s life.
In addition, the program offers a variety of workshops and family strengthening activities which includes educational programs, as well as holiday events and family picnics, to supplement the mentoring relationship.
What skills or training is needed to become a mentor?
Volunteer mentors must be 21 years of age or older and are required to complete a comprehensive 3 week training program which is offered three times per year in the fall, winter and spring. Additionally all mentors must undergo a thorough screening process which includes fingerprint, law enforcement and motor vehicle checks.
The Mentoring Moms program staff provides supervision and support to mentors through regular, frequent one-on-one communication, regular "recharge" meetings, and workshops on pertinent issues such as job skills and setting life goals. Volunteer mentors are reimbursed up to $35 per month for expenses incurred on behalf of the mother they are mentoring.
