Thank you for your interest in learning more about the 14-unit Emerson Veterans Supportive Housing Project, and giving our veterans the comfort and safety they deserve!

What the Veterans Need

There are 14 one-bedroom apartments in the Emerson complex, which was built under the auspices of the Bergen County Housing Authority. Each apartment has fixtures and appliances, but comes unfurnished. Unfortunately the veterans who will be renting the apartments have very limited income and little to no ability to purchase bedding or furniture.

Making-It-Home is honored to have been chosen to furnish the 14 new apartments at the Emerson Veterans Supportive Housing Project. To accomplish our goal, we are working with a small number of project sponsors and suppliers to provide the financing, products and services needed to help our veterans feel at home.

The Emerson Veterans Supportive Housing Project

In 2016 Bergen County was certified as the first county in the State, and one of the few in the Country, to end veteran homelessness.  To continue this effort, the Bergen County Housing Authority, the NJ Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency and American Legion Post 269 collaborated to develop 14 units of housing in Emerson specifically for veterans. Bergen County Veteran Services, Catholic Charities and Making-It-Home have joined the partnership and are providing financial and supportive products and services. Construction of the apartments will be completed June 30, 2017, and veterans are expected to take occupancy shortly thereafter.

The Emerson project is being hailed as a national model on how public/private partnerships can effectively house and support the low-income veteran community.  A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held later this summer to thank supporters and welcome the new residents.  Representatives from the local, County, State and Federal government will attend, and local and national media will be present.  This is an exciting opportunity for the project’s community partners and contributors to be recognized and participate in hands-on engagement as well.
