CollegeLEADS is a leadership program for college students to learn about local government and public policy. Students analyze community issues and develop new approaches to problem solving. The program is designed to get students excited about community engagement and public policy. The students take a deep look into a compelling community issue.  They look at the many facets of the issues figuring out where their generation can take a stand and make some impact toward resolve.

Inaugural Class of Bergen Community College’s CollegLEADS Program

Spring Semester 2017 launched the first CollegeLEADS program.  Partnering with Bergen Community College, 40 students explored, in-depth, Bergen County’s heroin epidemic.  They looked the law and public safety issues, mental health policies and supports, education, and healthcare.  They were able to meet with first responders, hospital staff, educators, people in various stages of recovery, and community leaders trying to grapple with this issue.

Please take a look at this compelling video created by Cassie Gilbert, student at BCC, and her interviews about the issue and what CollegeLEADS meant to the participants.
